Goalball is a unique and fast-paced sport specifically designed for athletes who are blind or have low vision, but with the use of blind folds, one of the few sports that can be inclusive while offering an equal, level playing field.

Invented post World War II to help rehabilitate visually impaired veterans, Goalball debuted at the Paralympics Games in 1976.

Played by two teams of three players on a rectangular indoor court, all players wear blackout eyeshades to ensure fairness, regardless of their level of vision.  This allows fully sighted players the opportunity to play even at national level.

Based purely on sound with a belled ball, and played on a court with tactile lining , players try to roll the ball into the opposition’s goal while defending their own with their bodies.

Goalball is not just an international sport, it is a powerful example of inclusive athletics, showcasing how innovation can create competitive opportunities for all.  If you’re curious to see it in action, get along to Care Expo Sydney.

And for those keen to try out their skills, NSW Goalball will happily give you the opportunity to take to the court.
